  • Submerge the egg in cool water and watch!
  • In 48 to 72 hours and keeps growing to 5 inches in length
  • Great way to teach measurement!
  • Beginning egg measures approx 2.5 inches

Just completely submerge your 2.5 inch turtle egg in a glass or bowl of water,
and wait. Within 12-24hrs, cracks will start to appear in the shell of the
egg. And within 48 hrs, you will have hatched your very own baby tortoise.
Leave it in the water, and it will continue to grow! Once you take it out of
the water though, after a few days it will start to shrink back down to its
original size. Just put it back in the water, and it will start to grow again!
Tortoise colors may vary Growing animals and other things (brains etc!) that
are made to increase in size in water are made up of two polymers. One is
poly(vinyl acetate) which keeps the original proportions and shape of the item
or creature, and the other polymer is polyacrylamide which is the super
absorbent polymer. The growing creatures have many teaching applications in
science and math, including graphing, drawing conclusions, and measurement
using linear, mass and volume. The Growing Creatures Book by Anne Linehan and
Betsy Franco details measurement and data collection projects integrating math
and science. Recommended for ages 6 and up

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for the egg to hatch?
Cracks will start to appear within 12-24 hours of submerging the egg in water. The tortoise will fully hatch within 48 hours. It will then continue to grow to about 5 inches in length over the next 24-72 hours.
How big does the tortoise get?
The egg starts at approximately 2.5 inches. Once hatched and growing in water, it reaches up to 5 inches in length.
Will the tortoise stay big after it grows?
No. Once you remove the tortoise from water, it will shrink back to its original size over a few days. Simply place it back in water and it will grow again.
Do I need to do anything special to care for it after hatching?
Keep the tortoise submerged in cool water to maintain its grown size. Use only cool water—hot water is not recommended. The tortoise doesn't require feeding or special care, making it a low-maintenance toy.
What are the tortoise colors?
Tortoise colors may vary, so you won't know the exact color until it hatches and grows.
What age is this toy recommended for?
This science kit is recommended for ages 6 and up. It teaches measurement, graphing, and data collection through hands-on observation.
